Software: PhotoImpact-X3
All versions should work just fine

Skill Level:  Beginner

You will need
*PhotoImpact
*The block you created in
Part 1
*3 copyright free, coordinating photos of your own or choose from the Copyright-Free Photo Sites

This tutorial is designed to teach you how to make a 3D Picture Cube in PhotoImpact.

If you are doing this for the Beginners Workshop

  • You will be posting 2 images...
    The block from Part 1
The 3D Picture Cube in Part 2
  • Keep your 3D Picture Cube on a white background.
  • re-size (if needed) to BW forum guidelines

Opening the canvas and pictures

  • Open a 500x300 pixel canvas.
  • Open the 3 photos you have chosen
  • Duplicate each photo
  • Close the originals
  • Go to your Easy Palette and drag the block that you made in Part 1 to your canvas
  • Click in white space to de-select the block

Preparing the Photos

Take a close look at each of your photos. You will want the most important photo on piece A. Choose the least important and darkest for piece B. Choose a close-up for piece C.

  • Select your Crop Tool
  • Crop each of your photos somewhat close to a square. You do not have to be perfect on this.
  • Notice that I cropped quite a bit out of a couple of the photos for greater interest. I also flipped 2 of them for a better look on the cube.

Now for the Magic
Pasting the Photos onto the Cube

  • Click on your photo for piece A
  • Edit → Copy
  • Go back to your cube
  • Using your Pick Tool, select piece A and...
  • Edit → Paste → Fit Into Selection
  • Repeat the copy and pasting for the other two photos

Now your Picture Cube should be looking pretty good, but let's give it some finishing touches to make it look great!

Painting the Edges

In order to give each picture a finished look you will paint on the edges (POE)

  • Select your Paintbrush
  • On the attribute toolbar
    Color=Black
    Brush Head Size=3
    Transparency=0
    Soft Edge=10
  • With your Pick tool, select one of your photos
Effect → Creative → Paint on Edges
  • Repeat the POE steps for the other two pieces
With the final piece still selelcted
  • Object → Select all objects → Merge as a Single Object

The Final Step-Adding a Shadow

    With your Picture Cube selected
  • Object → Shadow
  • Choose the last shadow on the right
  • With settings as shown in the picture to the right
The shadow is still a bit big so we'll fix that by...
  • Object → Split Shadow
  • Click in white space/background to de-select Picture Cube
  • Click on shadow - Now your shadow will move independently
  • Select the Transform Tool and being sure your padlock is open...
  • Pull the middle top handle down a bit so you flatten your shadow
  • Pull the middle bottom handle up so the bottom edge aligns with the bottom left corner of your Picture Cube as in bottom picture to the right

Click in white space to de-select and take a look at your beautiful 3D Picture Cube !!!

If you are doing this for the Beginner's Workshop, please add your watermark and post in your BW forum.
